About Puerto Rican Culture

There’s so much to love about Puerto Rican culture. Our culture is a vibrant fusion of old and new, blending native, Spanish, and African customs. The expressions of our culture may be seen all across the Island. It’s visible in everything from colorful murals to art museums. Our vibrant way of life can be felt in our exciting bomba dance style to our energetic street festivals.

The people of Puerto Rico continue to uphold traditions year after year. We have the Three Kings Day parades in January and the “party in the street” festival, Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian in Old San Juan, our historic city. With so many festivals, events, and holiday festivities being celebrated across the island there is fun and excitement year round.

Puerto Rico’s art landscape is distinctive and rich in history. With vibrant street murals and galleries and museums specializing in modern art. Classic works from the 17th century are abundant in the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (Museum of Puerto Rico Art) in Santurce. If you want a taste of the Island’s contemporary side, don’t miss the nearby Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Puerto Rico Contemporary Museum). A less conventional art gallery, Distrito T-Mobile provides a diverse selection of mosaics, murals, sculptures, and installations created by Puerto Rican artists. Additionally, you can find additional art in locations like Bayamón and Ponce. Local artwork, whether it be a painting or a hand-carved sculpture, makes the ideal gift to send home.

What is Puerto Rico Known For?

Puerto Rico is known for our stunningly beautiful beaches, friendly people and gorgeous bioluminescent bays. We are also one of the world’s leading rum producers with the largest rum distillery. Puerto Rico is the birthplace to the Pina Colada and has the only rainforest located in the USA.

Puerto Rico’s tropical vibe is always present because of the music and rhythm that permeates the Island. Traditional salsa and mellower sounds like the trova are both popular musical genres in Puerto Rico. So is bomba y plena, a catchy dance with African roots. Bring your dance shoes because the Island’s musical scene is too amazing to miss!

We refer to ourselves as Boricuas in Puerto Rico. It’s a distinctive moniker that celebrates our Island past, but it also represents a way of life, a mentality, a rhythm, and a distinct flavor that are all unique to Puerto Rico. You’ll discover that spirit in yourself after coming to visit us. We encourage you to experience Puerto Rico the Boricua way, starting with our glistening beaches and continuing with our vibrant and diverse culture.
